mapthis.link extracts geographic locations from online articles and plots them on an interactive map. It helps you visualize the geographical context of news articles and written content.
Simply paste an article URL, and the app will analyze the text to find mentions of cities, countries, landmarks, and other places. Each location is then displayed on a map with context from the article.
How it works
- You paste an article URL into the input field
- The app extracts the article content from the webpage
- An AI model analyzes the text to identify geographic locations
- Each location is geocoded and displayed on an interactive map
- Click on markers to see the context in which each location was mentioned

Privacy
Here's what happens when you use mapthis.link:
- Article URLs: When you submit a URL, the server fetches the article content to extract text and metadata. This site is hosted at Cloudflare.
- Article text: The extracted text is sent to OpenRouter (an AI API service) to identify geographic locations.
- Location names: Identified locations are sent to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service for geocoding (converting place names to coordinates).
What we don't do
- We don't store your article URLs or content
- We don't track which articles you analyze
- We don't use tracking scripts
- We don't sell or share data with third parties (other than specified here)

Local storage
Your recent lookups are stored locally in your browser's IndexedDB (not on our servers). This allows you to quickly revisit articles you've mapped. You can clear this data at any time:
